Friends of the Maltz Museum Presents a May 15th Event for the Community
(CLEVELAND, OHIO) “Because I remember, I despair,” said Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor Elie Weisel. “Because I remember, I have the duty to reject despair.” On Sunday, May 15, Friends of the Maltz Museum celebrates World War II liberators, Holocaust survivors and their descendants who share their memories with a Holocaust Education & Remembrance Day. “Our guests bear witness to educate future generations and encourage us all to speak out against injustices,” says the volunteer group’s president Victor Goodman. “Their messages are important and their bravery inspires us all.”
This one-day, volunteer-driven commemoration is open to the public. Visitors not only will be able to hear the first-person narratives of Julie Hennenberg Kronenberg, Joe Klein and Dick Dutro, but they’ll be able to connect with community groups such as Kol Israel Foundation and Congregation Shaarey Tikvah’s Face to Face Holocaust education program. “An important piece of the day’s programming is a screening of Lost Town at 1pm,” says Goodman. The 7th Art Releasing documentary tells the story of the small town of Trochenbrod, Poland (now Ukraine) the memory of which, with the exception of 33 survivors, was obliterated by the Nazis. “The late Betty Gold, a beloved Maltz Museum volunteer who spoke to thousands of students, was a Trochenbrod survivor and we’re showing Lost Town to honor her story and her amazing contribution to our community.”
Admission to the Maltz Museum on May 15th (11am – 5pm) is reduced to $5 per person and includes guided tours of Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann at 1, 2 and 3pm. “This powerful exhibition explores how the 1961 globally broadcast trial of a Nazi war criminal forced to world to face the atrocities of the Holocaust and empowered survivors to bear witness so this would not happen again,” says Goodman.
