Project: LEARN of Medina County to Host 5K Zombie Run

Project: LEARN of Medina County is pleased to announce the zombies are returning to Medina County!

Buckeye Woods in Medina will be taken over by zombies on Saturday, October 17, 2015, for our favorite running event of the season. The 5K Zombie Run is a “run for your life” challenge that will ensure a great pace for our runners. Each registered runner or walker will have 3 flags attached to them. These flags represent “lives.” Runners and walkers will traverse a 5k course through Buckeye Woods but will have to watch out for the zombies who might capture a flag and thus infect the runner. The winners will be the first to cross the finish line with at least one life still intact.  Medals will be awarded to the top finishers.

For those who are not runners (zombies stumble along rather than run) but can get into zombie character, this is your chance.  We welcome zombie brides, zombie cheerleaders, zombie prom dates, celebrity zombies, zombie lawyers, and zombies from all walks (or stumbles) of life!

New this year:  The Zom-Wee 1-Mile-ish Fun Run!  Kids of all ages are invited to wear their costumes and run the one-mile event to celebrate the season!  No zombie chasers allowed—just fresh air, exercise, and fun!  A low registration price makes this event family-friendly.  All kids 14 and under who finish the Zom-Wee run will receive reusable tote bags with candy as their prize, perfect to re-use for trick-or-treat on Halloween.

Executive director of Project: LEARN, Karla Robinson, notes, “We get so many return runners for this event every year.  The zombie craze is still going strong, and our event is reasonably priced so everyone can come out and join the fun!”

Registration costs $25 for 5K Zombie Run runners ($30 day of race); $10 for zombies on the 5K course ($18 if the zombie wants a t-shirt). The 1 mile Fun Run is only $10 to register, $18 if the runner would like a t-shirt.   All proceeds benefit Project: LEARN’s adult and family literacy and tutoring programs in Medina County.  Project: LEARN helps adult students to change their lives by providing free tutoring in reading, math, and English as a second language.

Runners and zombies can register in advance of October 1  by visiting www.active.com.  On-site registration will be available the day of the event at Buckeye Woods Park, 6335 Wedgewood Road in Medina. Same-day registration opens on site at 2 p.m., 1 Mile Zom-Wee fun-run race time is 3 p.m., and the 5 K Zombie Run race time is 4 p.m. Zombies arrive at 3 p.m. for makeup, 3:30 p.m. for zombie training.
